The Igunnu festival was originally the festival of the Nupe people who came from Bida and who are referred as “Tapa”. The masquerade is found where they settle e.g., Oshodi area of Lagos.
The Igunnu dresses in robes on stilts; it is a very tall figure and is a secret cult to hunt witches. It parades the streets and visits important people. On sighting the Igunnu, one has to remove his hat and shoes.
A companion of the Igunnu is the “Salumogi”, a very short masquerade that holds a whip and clears the way for the Igunnu.
