Born on September 23, 1930, in Albany Georgia, Ray Charles Robinson is largely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of all time.

At a young age, Charles lost his eyesight, so his family—who had moved to Greenville, Florida when he was an infant—sent him to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine. While attending school there, he learned to read, write, and even arrange music in Braille. He also showed a strong propensity to playing instruments and took up playing the clarinet, trumpet, piano, sax, and organ.

In the 1940s, after moving to Seattle, Washington at the age of 16, Charles performed with the McSon Trio, and eventually released his first single “Confession Blues” in 1949, with the Maxim Trio.

In 1953, Charles signed with Atlantic Records. Shortly after signing, he released one of his most recognizable songs, a hit single titled “Mess Around.” The very next year, “I Got a Woman” hit number 1 on the R&B charts.

In 1960, Charles won his first Grammy Award with “Georgia on My Mind.” He went on to record many more songs that are widely recognized and beloved.

Throughout his lifetime, Charles performed more than 10,000 concerts and recorded over 60 albums. He passed away at his home in Beverly Hills on June 10, 2004.
