Born in Igbein Ogun State he attended Igbein Primary School and the CMS Training Institute. He taught Music and singing in several schools. He was the first Nigerian Gospel singer and the first to compose Church hymns. He was renowned for using his singing and musical skills to gain christian converts. Rev J.J Ransome-Kuti was grandfather to Afro-beat legend Fela Kuti and Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka.
