Kano town walls, 1950s. One of the historical city wall gates known as "Kofars". (Kofar means gate in Hausa language).

Built as a wall for protection and most importantly to control trade in and out of the city.

The foundations of the first gate was laid by Sarkin Gijimasu in 1112 AD. The first gate was named after his first son, Damina also known as Kansakali.
