Obafemi Awolowo was the first Nigerian politician to campaign outside his region and with a helicopter when he visited the Northern Region in 1959. It was a rare sight for the locals, a good campaign strategy for Awolowo, who flocked out massively to the chagrin of Sir Ahmadu Bello, then Premier of the Northern Region.
Although, Awolowo did not win in the North in the federal elections on December 12, 1959, the desire to move out to other groups of people and his astute helicopter campaign-strategy changed the face of politics in Nigerian history.
