This is the original Nigerian Flag designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, a 23-year-old engineering student in London, in 1959. He received £100 for his work.

The flag had a red sun with streaming rays placed at the top of the white stripe but was removed by the judges and the flag has not been altered since. It was first officially used on October 1, 1960, Nigeria's Independence Day.

Before the December 12, 1959 federal elections, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe said his NCNC party did not like the flag and would change the design if they won the majority in government. They never won and the flag remains as it is till this day.
