“Never be afraid of taking a decision. History will forgive you for taking a wrong decision but will certainly not forgive you for not taking a decision at all”
- President Ibrahim Babangida.
Babangida’s aides recalled military officers being in a combative mood and putting pressure on Babangida to retroactively void the election. When he attempted to explain the provisions of the Transition’s decree to senior military officers, Professor Omoruyi was sharply reminded by Lt-General Dogonyaro that “This is a military government, professor you are not part of it” . Omoruyi recalled his visit to Babangida on June 18, during which he noted Babangida’s stressed disposition and said that Babangida “was a different man”…. He was very very different morose and curled in one corner of the sofa” Omoruyi claimed Babangida told him “ They will kill me, they will kill the president-elect, Chief M.K.O Abiola, if I went ahead with the election and announced the winner… which we all know to be Bashorun M.K.O Abiola” … He was now at the sharp point of a dilemma: it was either his life or his honour as an officer and a gentleman. He was inclined to settle for the former (his life) and let go of the latter (his honour).
At one point Babangida was so overcome by the mental strain that he said he was considering consulting a psychiatrist
